Animal Welfare Assistant

Worcestershire Animal Rescue Shelter (WARS) is a registered Charity occupying a 6 acre site in Newland, Nr Malvern in Worcestershire.

We have an opportunity for a full-time Animal Welfare Assistant on a temporary 3 month contract with the possibility of permanent employment at our Rescue and Rehoming Shelter for domestic dogs and cats.  You will need a relevant animal care qualification and/or relevant experience in caring for dogs and cats in either a commercial boarding or rescue organisation.

Duties in brief :  To ensure an excellent individuality quality of care in all aspects of animal husbandry to include feeding, medicating, health checks, grooming, exercise socialisation and training plans.  To accurately record and maintain associated documentation.  To support the rehoming process with excellent customer care to potential adoptees, supporters and visitors.   To assist with supervision of work experience students and animal care volunteers.

                - Excellent communication skills and customer care

                - Ability to work under pressure

                - Full clean driving licence essential

Job Description





Title :                          Animal Welfare Assistant

Responsible to :       Site or Relief Manager


Purpose of the Job


  • Maintain high levels of cleanliness and efficiency throughout the Shelter.
  • Carry out all duties to a standard set by the Site Manager including feeding, cleaning of all animals, walking of all dogs and general housekeeping.
  • Monitor and report all behavioural and physical observations of animals in the care of the Shelter.
  • Communicate effectively with the Site Manager (Relief Manager if Site Manager unavailable) with regard to any issues, problems, changes or complaints that may occur on a day to day basis.
  • Ensure the highest standards of customer care are delivered to all Shelter visitors and contacts by presenting a professional and friendly approach both face to face and on the telephone.
  • Assist clients to select animals appropriate to their circumstances by providing accurate and relevant information and advice.
  • General administration support with day to day paperwork and record keeping.
  • Ensure all Health and Safety processes and procedures are followed by everyone at the Shelter.
  • Monitor and organise all volunteers and ensure tasks are completed to a high standard.
  • Maintain good working relations with all staff, volunteers and third party suppliers where applicable.
  • Attend all scheduled appraisals and reviews and complete all objectives to a satisfactory standard as set by the Site Manager.
  • To maintain a highly professional manner at all times.
  • Ensure that all public areas are left clean and tidy at the end of each working day.
